The Dance Program at The IDEAL School provides a space to explore the joy of movement with a commitment to developing each child’s self-expression and self-confidence. Dance at IDEAL integrates technique and excellence into the creative process and often intentionally overlaps with the academic program. Teachers present exercises that incorporate more than one way to be successful so that all students are able to dance at a level that reflects and builds upon their strengths. The program emphasizes performance and gives all students the opportunity to showcase their work in studio presentations, assemblies, and dance videos. A guest artist program of performances, classes, and workshops in the Lower, Middle, and High Schools exposes students to the richness, diversity, and uniqueness of what dance in New York City has to offer. This includes collaborations with the National Dance Institute in the Lower School and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in the Middle School.Dance in the Lower School
The emphasis in the Lower School curriculum is on World Dance. Students learn folk, traditional, and social dances from around the globe and are introduced to the styles of modern, jazz, ballroom, and American musical theater. A Yoga and Mindfulness elective program develops students’ resilience by providing exercises to help with stress reduction and self-regulation.
Dance in the Upper School
Students in sixth grade take a year-long Dance Foundations course. In seventh and eighth grades, a Dance Elective Program provides students a choice of dance offerings that includes Modern/Contemporary, Jazz, Hip Hop, Yoga, Composition, Bollywood, and Video Dance. The Dance Department also supports the Theater Program in the production of their Upper School Spring Musical. In the High School, students may elect independent dance projects designed by them and facilitated by an instructor, which may include dance choices from the Middle School Dance Elective Program. High School student independent dance projects culminate in a final portfolio and showcase of their work.
