Next Steps is a student-centered individualized transition program for young adults aged 18-21

Dear Families,

The Next Steps Transition Program at The IDEAL School of Manhattan is a student-centered, individualized program designed for young adults ages 18–21. Building on each student’s unique strengths, goals, and interests, we create personalized pathways that support continued growth in social-emotional development, adaptive life skills, executive functioning, and vocational readiness. The program also partners closely with students and families to plan for life after IDEAL, with an emphasis on identifying and accessing appropriate adult services and supports.

Students who attended IDEAL for High School may continue their education in the Next Steps program for one to three additional years, remaining in a familiar and supportive environment alongside peers. IDEAL’s differentiated and individualized classes promote academic growth while also emphasizing career preparation and everyday living skills. Ongoing arts education further supports confidence, self-awareness, and self-expression.

IDEAL welcomes families to tour the program and offers shadow days for prospective students, whether they are transitioning from within the IDEAL community or joining from another program. To schedule a tour or shadow day, please contact Hilary Smith, Director of Admissions and Enrollment Management.

Thank you,

The Next Steps Transition Program at The IDEAL School of Manhattan is a one-, two-, or three-year program designed to support students aged 18–21 in reaching their fullest potential. As one of the most comprehensive transition programs for students with disabilities, Next Steps empowers young adults by focusing on their unique strengths, goals, and interests.

Next Steps gives students the tools to live as independently as they are able, and supports them in locating adult services.

Our student-centered approach fosters growth in social-emotional development, adaptive life skills, executive functioning, and vocational training. The program also helps students and their families navigate the shift from educational to adult services, ensuring a smooth transition into the next phase of life. Whether students are continuing their education, pursuing employment, or developing independent living skills, Next Steps provides the guidance and resources they need.
