The IDEAL High School

IDEAL’s High School inspires students to achieve their full potential and map out their road to the future.
In small, engaging classes, teachers build students’ skills, confidence, and leadership through a challenging and inclusive curriculum. High School students in Grades 9-12 learn together in academic classes, organized by readiness level, where teachers differentiate the coursework to support and challenge students based on the students' individual learning styles. Classes allow students to progress at their own pace, with advanced and honors groups for those who are ready.

Students also meet daily in grade-level advisory groups, which incorporate IDEAL’s health, diversity, and life skills curricula, building self-awareness, advocacy, and real-world skills.

Juniors and seniors work with our dedicated college and postsecondary counselor to plan and prepare for their next steps, exploring career opportunities through shadow days and conversations with special guests in our Lunch and Learn series. Through a partnership with Lighthouse Learning, special guests occasionally make surprise visits to share their experiences and insights with our students. Recent guest speakers have included former NBA player Quinn Cook, singer Jason Derulo, and author and news anchor Cheryl Wills.

Capstone projects, such as our annual Civil Rights Museum, service learning days, and our Senior Civil Rights Journey, strengthen friendships and deepen High School students’ leadership skills. High School students serve as Big Buddies to Lower Schoolers and they play important leadership roles on IDEAL’s Student Council, athletic teams, and in the arts. In their senior year, each student delivers a senior speech about their journey, growth, and next steps to the student body and faculty.

IDEAL graduates go on to attend a range of colleges and postsecondary programs that reflect the unique diversity of the class. They have matriculated to American University, Colgate University, Guttman Community College, Hunter College,  NYU, Riverview School,Rochester Institute of Technology, SUNY Potsdam, and Syracuse University – Inclusive U.

But far more important than the places they go are the people they become, bringing  the values of respect, kindness, and creative leadership into the wider world.
