World Down Syndrome Day Assembly

On Friday morning, IDEAL celebrated World Down Syndrome Day (officially March 21), where students learned facts about Down syndrome and the day marked to raise awareness and celebrate people with it. Mr. Sussman and Dr. Soldovieri shared a slideshow that explained how a person who was born with an extra chromosome may look, learn, or grow differently, but that they, like everyone, are different from one another. The assembly included a game where students were given a piece of paper with the colors of World Down Syndrome Day: blue (symbolizing calmness and strength) or yellow (joy and optimism), and asked to pair up with someone holding the opposite color to sing the school song together. Mr. Sussman invited the group to wear mismatched socks the next week as a way of raising awareness. Photos from the assembly are in this Facebook album.
