Pi Day Assemblies

Pi Day activities spanned academics and specials. In Mr. Prodis’s second and fourth grade classes combined pie fractions with color theory equations, such as 1/4+1/4=1/2, or primary color + primary color = secondary color. Mr. Patterson had a Pi Day miracle appear on his whiteboard when his Solstice projector’s access code perfectly matched the first 4 digits of pi! His Algebra II class calculated that the probability of this occurring was exactly 1 in 10,000. All students were treated to a performance by The Art of Stepping, who created a math-based step program for us. The afternoon Pi Recitation Contest challenged a representative from each grade to recite as many digits of pi as they could remember. All were impressive, and recited dozens of digits correctly. One first grader had been looking forward to this day for weeks. He successfully recited 244 digits of pi and was given his award. Also on the table was a Pie-Making Contest, included because it’s a homonym, circular, and delicious. Students tasted the array of treats, and three winners stood out in the end: Ms. Smith, Ms. Arata, and our special guest, third grade parent Mr. Kleinhandler. Photos and videos are in this Facebook album.
