A Great Time at Ragtime

A Great Time at Ragtime

On Wednesday afternoon, almost every High School student attended a performance of the musical Ragtime at Lincoln Center. This inclusive, interdisciplinary field trip tied together themes that our English and history teachers have been teaching throughout most of the school year. In the weeks and days leading up to the trip, classes held in-depth conversations to foster their understanding of the material, both in the musical and the history upon which it is built. Classes discussed immigration, workers' rights, and racial equity in their life skills classes, and spent Thursday morning debriefing and discussing the ties between the musical and modern-day issues. Thanks to Ms. Morgan, Ms. Novotny, and Ms. Seymour for making this opportunity possible and for preparing the students to understand and appreciate the work on deeper levels. And thanks to PA President Yolanda Wyns, the students took part in a talkback session after the show.

A large group of people, dressed in a variety of colorful and creative costumes, gathered in an urban setting with tall buildings and a cloudy sky in the background.
