Middle School science classes took field trips in the past two weeks to Battery Urban Farm. Led by staff farmers Elle and Mandy, the students learned about plants, the soil they grow in, and the wildlife that keeps the farm ecosystem thriving. The students participated in the farm work by planting native paw paw tree seeds and transplanting oregano to help prepare for the upcoming planting season. They got their hands dirty in compost and observed the red wiggler worms that break down the organic material into soil. The tour finished with a sampling of produce on the farm, including cucumelons, ground cherries, lemon balm, and more. Photos are in this Facebook album.
