Unique Aspect of Our Program
| Inclusion
The school is committed to extending diversity in independent schools to include students with varying abilities. Our goal is to create a community of families and students that represent a cross section of New York City. A general education teacher and learning specialist combine efforts in our homerooms to provide support and enrichment to all students. Both are responsible for instructional planning and delivery, student achievement, assessment, and discipline. Collaborative teaching allows for flexibility in instruction, low student to teacher ratios, and comprehensive observation and assessment. Every student has an ILP (Individualized Learning Profile), a comprehensive, dynamic set of documents which details academic, social, and emotional goals specific to each student based on their learning style, strengths, challenges, and interests. An ILP includes individual curriculum maps (I-Maps) that chart each child's development in core academic subjects including literacy and math, as well as progress reports. Teachers collaborate during individual student team meetings to construct and revise the ILP throughout the year. Using ILPs, teachers set personalized goals and differentiate instruction for each student, including everyone in all curricular themes. Our elective program includes both enrichment and support. Classes include Chess, Mandarin, Drama, and more. Support services include Speech and Language and Occupational Therapy as well as academic tutoring. The program allows all students to receive accelerated pacing and/or support as needed, without children being segregated from their classmates or missing academic periods. |
